Introduction to Network Topologies

Network topology represents the physical side of the network and they are considered to be the foundation of overall systems. There are two opposing concepts related to the network topology: physical layout of the network and logical layout of the network.

  • The physical layout of a network is related directly to the cabling and wiring that connects devices such as, the bus, ring, star, mesh and hybrid topologies.
  • The logical layout of a network is equated to the methodology of accessing the network (the stuff you cannot touch or see).
